Maine Art Education Association Honors Sanborn, Education and Outreach Coordinator for Waterville Creates, with Art Educator of the Year Award
WATERVILLE – Waterville Creates Education and Outreach Coordinator Serena Sanborn will receive the Arts Educator of the Year award in the Supervision category. An official statewide recognition ceremony will take place virtually on Saturday, May 1 at 4 p.m.
Waterville Creates develops and delivers a wide variety of arts education and awareness programs for residents of the Waterville area and their families. WC works with a multitude of organizational partners to maximize its reach and ensure access to a wide range of community members.
Sanborn, WC has reinvented existing programs and developed new initiatives to keep the community connected and engaged in the arts through the pandemic and the unprecedented challenges it presented. Sanborn has organized numerous art classes and camps virtually on WC’s Facebook page, led the collaborative Art Kits for All program, which distributed more than 3,500 art kits to families in the area, and hosted the WC on the go video series.
Most recently, Sanborn worked with WC partners to develop a new online format for the existing teen program, SLICE (Students Learning Innovative Creative Endeavors), which highlights different media, institutions and career paths in the arts. The participation of adolescents in SLICE has increased significantly with the new virtual format, as the barrier of transport has been removed. âVirtual SLICE is just one of many ways Serena has identified a distinct challenge and reinvented it in creative and accessible ways.
