If one looked up the dictionary definition of the word “bracelet” – the now very popular ancient accessory that has vast cross-cultural significance dating back almost 5,000 years – they would find it commonly characterized as a circular and rigid ornamental bracelet, slipped or tight, fashioned from materials ranging from seashells and clay to various metals, glass and gemstones. A concept historically intact, quite indescribable, isn’t it?
Well, rigid One cannot be less precise in describing the way things are done at Banglez, the Toronto-based jewelry brand born out of South Asian influence. Their corporate philosophy and signature style embody an entirely imaginative, modern and daring approach to the term. Partners in life and in business, the founders Malinda and Hardip Chohan, seek to recreate enduring cultural props by weaving the old ways with the new. The inventive pair accomplish this in significant ways by infusing their personalities as well as timely and socially conscious trends into the collective and personalized experience of their jewelry wearers.
I was fortunate enough to discover Banglez nine years ago, when it was in its infancy and the couple were still working in their cellar at home. It was barely two days before my own wedding, on a hot, sunny July afternoon, and I was frantic that I hadn’t found any bridal jewelry that I deemed worthy of fading before my big day. Imagine my utter surprise when I pulled into the Chohan Residence, was greeted at the door and led downstairs to a dizzying display of the rows of custom-made bracelets, necklaces, tikkas and nose rings. more eye-catching than I had. already seen. Abundantly studded with sparkling stones and shiny metals, multicolored threads and ornate patterns, their work was indeed striking. From the basement to the store, I watched the ascent of Banglez from a salesperson in the South Asian wedding industry to a global follower of superior art and fashion. Almost a decade later, I still marvel at how they took such a simple concept and turned it into something so completely and extraordinarily their own.
All major movers have a few things in common: an original vision, the courage to take a few risks and tenacity facing the challenge. The goal in Banglez has always been a creative self-expression, deeply rooted in authenticity and inclusiveness. Designed in 2006, the inspiration behind Banglez predates Malinda’s own bridal experience, but she was still quite aware that there were very few accessory options available for South Asian brides at home. ‘era. Passionate about the art of makeup and jewelry throughout her life, Malinda was inspired to design a brand of bridal jewelry that is as accessible as it is customizable. Unsure of where to begin this new journey, the couple decided to bring their foraging talents and skills to India, traveling the country to places like Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab and Rajasthan to the finding raw materials, manufacturers and suppliers with whom they could work.
As the shipments arrived from India to Toronto, Hardip’s involvement in repairing and exchanging stones in parts to better meet the needs of their customers, allowed him to become more up-to-date. comfortable and more confident when working with jewelry. He quickly learned to use various stones to create and manipulate new patterns and styles. Their development as jewelry designers, rather than simply importers, marked an unexpected and exciting turning point for the company. Banglez’s approach has evolved by combining loose stones and various materials with artisanal methods to handcraft their collections entirely in-house. Customers found the idea of ââcreating their own jewelry appealing and excited that they didn’t have to wait or worry about how long it would take to ship from India.
Over the years, as Banglez continued to thrive along this artistic trajectory, Malinda and Hardip began to truly discover their love for jewelry making. Their work became more complex and unique, and as their fascination with crystals and semi-precious stones deepened, they learned more about their benefits and found ways to incorporate them into their pieces. In 2019, the couple faced personal challenges, including the loss of Malinda’s mother. The climax of these ushered in a reconnection to the couple’s faith and spirituality, and in a Reiki session, Malinda experimented with the use of crystals on each of her chakras. For the couple, it was no mere coincidence but a fateful reminder of the power and raw beauty of these stones, and the transformative quality they possess.
It was at this point that the couple’s work changed again, from superficial to experiential. They decided it was high time to share these benefits with others through their jewelry. They launched the Sage collection, which paid homage to each of the chakras and deepened the choices and benefits of the stone. This line inspired them to experiment with designing simpler pieces, designed for everyday use that would appeal to a wider audience. Since it was very different from what Banglez was known to wear, they decided to test the designs on Etsy. While the jewelry was well received, the global health crisis that followed months later put an end to the line’s promotion. The tremendous push from people around the world to return to nature for answers was one that Malinda and Hardip understood and truly connected with. Like so many others, the practice of âsocial distancingâ has become a time to focus on mind, body and spirit as a family. From their extensive work with precious crystals and gemstones, Malinda recalled that crystals were a natural diffuser for oils. Along with their children, they placed oils on their own crystals as part of their morning routine.
Very quickly, the couple is struck to realize that this practice can be adapted to their work as a designer. By carefully pairing their jewelry with oils, others might discover the jewelry they wear with an emphasis on natural elements; energetic healing aromas and crystals. The organic shift in focus seemed necessary for Malinda and Hardip as well, as it was natural. During a time of immense challenge, Malinda and Hardip felt like they were given a chance to persevere and grow again. With the determination of the human spirit and its ability to go beyond, the couple were deeply moved and inspired to launch the brand TenasÃ£ti (pronounce: tenacity / tuh-na-suh-tee).
