Students in artistic education, the teachers of Menomonie collaborate at the Camp des Beaux-Arts | Dunn County News

In an effort to help teachers find more joy in the classroom through art, Menomonie Arts Integration has partnered with the Menomonie Region School District and the University of Wisconsin-Stout to offer a free fine arts camp for elementary school students last summer.

Ten arts education students co-taught with teacher mentors from the school district for the weeklong camp, held at River Heights Elementary, July 26-30.

Arts education students working at the camp were: Olivia Bonlander, Chilton; Jackson Gardner, Eau Claire; Paige Hansen, Farmington, Minn .; Hannah Heimer, River Falls; Holly Hopkins, Cornell; Lauren Landsverk, Minneapolis; Jacob Mazourek, Rice Lake; Benjamin Mohr, Appleton; Samantha Snyder, Saint-Paul; and Hannah Waldner, McFarland.

“The kids at the Fine Arts Camp got the best of both worlds: experienced, licensed teacher mentors and dynamic university students learning more about how to be qualified teachers,” said Ann Oberding, director of the arts education program. “Collaborative, hands-on, career-focused programs like this help create happy future teachers. “

There were 125 students from grades 1 to 5 who attended the camp. UW-Stout and SDMA have partnered through the AIM grant for six years.

AIM coordinator Nicole Cook facilitated the roles of mentors and students throughout the week. “The purpose of AIM is to help teachers feel competent and confident using the integration of the arts in the classroom,” said Cook. “Often, if they haven’t been involved in the arts, they don’t feel comfortable using it in the classroom.

“The whole week was dedicated to students and mentors sharing their teaching and classroom management skills and artistic abilities, while also making connections for future student teaching or internship.”

Collaborate in classBonlander, an arts education student, was matched with Shelly Duex, a health education teacher at Menomonie Middle School. They taught students how to use acrylic paint, teaching them important skills, vocabulary, and artistic creation techniques to use in their own work, Bonlander said.

“Working with an educator who was unfamiliar with the content, I focused not only on teaching information in a fun and interesting way, but also on managing information,” she said. . “We worked on how to use paint and keywords when working with multiple colors. We discussed gradients, hues, shades and tones.

Bonlander then led the class by creating a step-by-step painting and landscape using art techniques. “I chose this project so that the students could feel 100% successful and confident in their ability to use acrylic paint. The landscape was a huge success and proved that the vocabulary we covered can be used in their future projects.

As a health teacher, Duex’s main goal is to help students live healthy lives physically, socially and emotionally. She attended the camp because she wanted to help future educators develop effective classroom management skills, she said.

“I also wanted to learn from the artist, so that I could integrate art into my health class,” she added. “Working with Olivia was a pleasant experience as we both brought different strengths to the class and we were able to learn from each other. It’s also wonderful to meet people who have the same passion as you.

The biggest takeaway from Duex camp was learning the importance of vocabulary when teaching an art-related skill. “Putting purpose and meaning in an art form allows students to expand their vocabulary and create a sense of value with what they do,” she said.

“Focusing on integrating the arts has an impact because it is important to understand that art can be used as an aid in many different subjects,” Bonlander added.

Bonlander has also worked in the STEAM and TEAM summer camps. She will graduate in the spring of 2022 and hopes to teach in college or high school.

The UW-Stout School of Education has been preparing teachers and educators since 1891. It offers seven undergraduate programs, five graduate programs, and post-baccalaureate educator certifications.
