Top 10 Pixel Art Games Releasing in 2022

The gaming world is getting closer to achieving near-realistic graphics with modern technology. But at the same time, game developers are working tirelessly to develop games that mimic 16-bit retro graphics to bring back the good old days of retro gaming with a touch of modern game mechanics.

There is a huge fanbase that loves pixelated games more than anything. And since we’re already halfway through 2022, I think it’s time we took a deep dive into the ocean of upcoming pixel art games. And there are quite a few games coming out this year.

Here is a list of the top 10 pixel-art indie games you should look forward to in 2022!

Son of Valhalla

Sons of Valhalla is one of my favorite titles on this list and for many good reasons. Set in the ancient times of the Viking Age, the game tells the story of two lovers who met a tragic incident when England attacked their once peaceful village and destroyed everything that stood in their way, and took the girl hostage.

The game puts you in the shoes of the lover, who must now take revenge on the invaders who destroyed his village and killed his people, and rescue his girlfriend from captivity. The gorgeous art style combined with a gripping storyline makes for a memorable adventure. Definitely worth putting on your list.

Space Bandit

Your gang abandoned you in times of need and left you to die, but against all odds… you survived the harshest conditions and now you’ve returned to take revenge on your gang. Set in a space, the game lets you experience hardcore roguelite gameplay with intense and fast-paced shooter action with a host of deadly weapons to choose from.

It’s an exciting mix of intense top-down shooter gameplay with retro pixel graphics that seem to be heavily inspired by Hotline Miami. What I love most about this game is that it features super smart enemy AI that puts your combat skills to the ultimate test.

soccer history

Football Story is probably the best title on this list as this game has a lot to offer from an immersive yet emotional storyline with great presentation and tons of activities to do in this vast pixelated world. You take on the role of young hardcore football fans as they try to rise through the ranks of their small towns and villages.

Each character has their own unique story to tell and demons to fight in their day to day life and that’s what makes this title so good. You can live a normal life, do daily household chores, train to improve your soccer skills, and relax with your friends. And the best part is that you can challenge your friends to an intense football game in multiplayer mode.

Blastronaut

Blastronaut takes you through the gates of space and into unknown planets filled with alien life. But again, you’re no ordinary astronaut, you’re an agent of chaos with a sticky gun that can literally destroy anything to gather valuable resources.

The game features a procedurally generated world that you can explore using your jetpack to fly with ease and fight off troubles with your deadly weapons. Explore mysterious planets, fight monsters, collect valuable items and escape! It’s not the best game story-wise, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you like chaotic action.

A space for the unrelated

If you love story-based games with a deep story that is both emotional and challenging, A Space for the Unbound might just be the title your soul craves. It tells the story of two high school lovers on a journey of self-discovery, overcoming anxiety and depression, and what it’s like to be in a relationship.

The game takes place in a small town in Indonesia with breathtaking visuals and lively characters who are always ready for a quick chat. However, something far more sinister is at play in this seemingly normal town and you must investigate to find out and save yourself from losing consciousness. It’s a perfect purse for players who love a good storyline more than epic fights.

Wanderer lost

This list simply cannot be completed without zombies and luckily we have the perfect game. Wanderlost puts you in the shoes of one of the last survivors trying to make the most of the resources around him in a wilderness full of man-eating monstrosities. The game contains many cool features including base building, farming, cooking, hunting and of course zombie fighting.

The art style is amazing and the attention to detail is excellent. It reminds me of Stardew Valley but in a post-apocalyptic setting with similar features that will keep you hooked for hours. I love the day-night cycle, which allows interesting encounters in the great outdoors. The combat is super smooth with a variety of weapons to help you survive the evil clutches of these monsters.

Replaced

While we’re talking about post-apocalpy games, Replaced is yet another thrilling sci-fi action platformer set in a world suffering from a catastrophic event. Playing as an AI trapped in a human body, you must survive in a world now ruled by greed and corruption. The game features intense free-flow combat combined with an immersive cinematic platforming that creates epic battle scenes.

Along with intense combat, the game also features stunning retro-stylized visuals in a futuristic setting. It’s by far one of the most action-packed and gore-packed titles on this list, with some epic executions that are thrilling to watch. Definitely one of the best titles coming out in 2022!

The non-living

Passing from the brain dead zombies, let’s enter the world of the living dead. The Unliving is another thrilling action-packed Roguelite RPG where you assume the role of a powerful necromancer who gathers an army of the undead by slaying the living. Every living you kill is reborn as the undead and joins your army to wreak havoc on the world.

The game features a rich art style with an intricate procedurally generated map that makes it a unique adventure. Each character when alive has different skills and weapons to fight for survival and when they die they can use the same skills against the army of the living.

With all of these awesome titles coming out, 2022 seems like a great year for pixel art games. These are just a few of the many games yet to be released this year and hopefully next. Be sure to save because if you like pixel art games the list is going to be very long!
